History of Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux
Origins and construction
Castelnau-Bretenoux castle, perched in the commune of Prudhomat in the Lot department, was founded in the 11th century by Hugues de Castelnau. This imposing red sandstone fortress is a major example of medieval military architecture. Initially built to defend the territory of the barons of Castelnau, the castle underwent several phases of expansion between the 12th and 17th centuries, consolidating its strategic position in the Quercy region.
Milestones
Notable events include the capture of the castle by Henry II of England in 1159, illustrating its military importance in the Middle Ages. After the Hundred Years’ War, the fortress reverted to the barons of Castelnau, who undertook its restoration. Later, in the 19th century, Jean Mouliérat, a singer with a passion for history, played a key role in preserving the château, endowing it with a rich collection of art and furniture.
